AstroAI multimeter

AstroAI Digital Multimeter

The AstroAI digital multimeter is truly one of the best budget multimeters that one will find in the market.

This measurement device is equipped with DC/AC voltage and current of good accuracy for the price.

It is further more equipped with resistance, frequency, capacitance, continuity and temperature measurement features.

It is very ergonomically designed with all the labels showing and buttons being clearly labelled.

What I really like about this multimeter is that it is fit for any type of application either it be for commercial of DIY use.

It has been safety accredited inline with the IEC 61010-1 for both CAT III (600V) and CAT II (1000V).

One thing that is a bit of an annoyance is that the beeping sound is a lot louder than other multimeters within this range, also the test leads are very basic and you might want to get your own leads to supplement the one’s that come with the product.

With that being said, it is an incredible multimeter for testing electrical issues in the house or on electronic circuits.

It also has what ASTROAI refer to as an “intelligent Anti-Burn and Double Protection fuse”. This basically ensures that your multimeter will be protected in the case of a surge or overcurrent.

Another great thing about these fuses, is that they come built in with the multimeter so you do not have to worry about installing them upon opening. They are F400mA/600V and F10A/600V explosion proof ceramic fuse tubes.

These are very reliable fast acting fuses that will ensure a high degree of measurement safety.

In terms of the ergonomics of the multimeter, there are very few others in the budget and inexpensive category that can compete with the ASTRO AI multimeter. It has a very strong back light LCD which makes operating the multimeter in poor lighting very easy.

It comes equipped with a magnet and a kickstand to ensure that you have maximum flexibility when you are working with the multimeter.

Probably the #1 feature for me has got to be the temperature measurement. The meter comes with a K-type thermocouple which provides a reasonable measurement of temperature.

For a multimeter with so many functions, and the flexibility of such a large measurement range the ASTRO AI multimeter is in my opinion one of the best budget multimeter’s on the market today.

What Are The Important Considerations For The Best Budget Multimeter

Size

When looking to purchase an inexpensive and cheap multimeter, you should consider the product dimensions and the overall size and weight of the product. I generally use the “one-hand test”.

This basically means that for an average adult, you should be able to handle the multimeter in one hand comfortably, then the multimeter is a reasonable size.

Also think about the weight, a reasonable multimeter should not feel heavy in your hands.

Measurement Capability

Your multimeter should be able to measure DC or AC voltage and current, resistance, capacitance, and in some cases with really high quality inexpensive multimeter temperature as well.

Furthermore, a really good budget multimeter should come with the ability to provide for additional function such as MIN/MAX data hold.

Safety Ratings

Typically when looking for purchase a budget multimeter do not forget to consider the safety ratings. Generally look for CAT III (600V) EN/IEC 61010-1 rating/ CE rated/RoHS rated certification on the badge or packaging.

This will ensure that you are equipped with a multimeter that provides for adequate fuse protection.

Battery Life

Budget multimeter usually come equipped with AAA batteries. Always check before you make a purchase whether the multimeter comes with the batteries or not.

These batteries generally last for a considerable amount of time. However be sure to always carry around some battery spares in your tool box just in case.

Ergonomic features

There are a couple of other features that really add value to your inexpensive budget multimeter such as a sturdy case, flashlight and low battery indicator.

All of these items make a budget multimeter feel like a top end option.

In preparing this guide, I made sure to incorporate as may of these items above to present you with a comprehensive list to choose from.

However if you wish to purchase a budget multimeter else were (which I respect). Please ensure for your own good that you at least consider the items listed above.

What To Avoid When Buying The Best Budget Multimeter

Going for the cheapest of the cheap

This often goes without saying and it is something I think is worth mentioning. When thinking budget multimeter the temptation to choose the absolute cheapest usually under $10 is always there.

I have a mantra, when going for an inexpensive or budget option try make sure that you do not go for the absolute cheapest. My view is a multimeter around between the $20 - $50 mark is generally a good quality budget option without losing quality.

I can tell you of many instances from personal experience and from knowledge from different peers that going cheaper than usually means that you will soon be buying another multimeter soon.

I don’t want that for you.

Untested Manufacturer

With the advent of white labelling and the lower barrier of entry when it comes to individuals creating measurement tools, there have been a lot of untested budget multimeters on the market.

An untested multimeter is one that has not been in the market for long enough for the cracks and issues regarding the tool to arise.

Again I will say, whenever you are buying a budget multimeter, make sure that you have at least a 1 or 2 year warranty period and there is sufficient evidence on the web that people have used this multimeter before.

In this guide I have done all the work for you in checking the validity of the multimeter manufacturer and you can rest assured that you are getting only the best, however if you desire to search for a budget multimeter on your own please check this before purchasing.

I have been burnt quite often, I do not want the same for you.

Budget Multimeter

Poor Warranty Information

I touched on this briefly above, but a multimeter manufacturer that does not provide you with warranty information is a serious red flag, and one I would seriously avoid.

Warranty is especially important at the inexpensive or budget range simply because the manufacturers could be incentivized to drop prices further by cutting corners on quality checks, production grade polymer material or functionality.

If you have a warranty, then you know that you are protected and the risk of any latent defects fall squarely upon the original equipment manufacturer for the duration of the warranty period.

Lack of after sale support

I know for a lot of people, this doesn’t really mean much. However for me this is super important. After sale support is things such as a product manual, instruction videos or pictures, contact information of the nearest support centre etc.

I always make sure that before I look to purchase any power tool, that these items are first and foremost available.

The reasoning behind this is quite simple.

If the original equipment manufacturer is not determined to produce the best experience for me (their prospective client). Then why should I bother supporting them with my hard earned cash.

I am a bit pedantic, however this is your call. I just thought to add this to make sure that you are fully covered when making your purchasing decision on the best budget or inexpensive multimeter.

For the price that you pay, this multimeter has it a wide range of measurement features. Everything from AC and DC voltage, AC and DC current. As well as resistance, diode continuity, capacitance, transistor hFE and duty cycle.

Mastech take safety very seriously and they have ensured that their multimeters have been built and constructed in line with the IEC/EN 61010-1 CAT II (1000V) and CAT III (600V) standard.

However this is quite standard for the best budget multimeters. Mastech go over and beyond and provide the RoHS certification on top of everything else as well.

There are a couple of issues with regard to this multimeter, these mainly being that there is no manual that comes with this device.

Although it is quite easy to use – you would at least expect some sort of manual. On top of this is does not have a temperature setting which is a bit of a bummer.

Very interestingly, it ships with a k-type thermocouple adapter so you can measure voltage difference and convert that into temperature however as you can imagine, this is a very ineffective way to operate.

With all of these being said however, it is still a very impressive budget multimeter.

It is ergonomically designed coming in with product dimensions of 195mmx92mmx55mm/7.7"x3.6"x2.2"   and a weight of 0.9 lb/400g making it lightweight and easy to fit into one hand, however I must say that it is still a little on the larger side so that is worth taking into consideration.

Overall it provides fairly accurate measurements, and for the price that you are paying it is one of the best budget multimeters that you can find on the market.

This relatively cheap option is packed with great features making it the best value for money.

It is extremely easy to use, the interface is typical of what you would expect from a multimeter. It has a “HOLD” button to capture the instantaneous value of a measurement.

The “FUNC” button is used to toggle between different measurement functions to be displayed on the screen.

The overall product dimensions come in at 5.5 x 2.8 x 1.6 inches making it compact and very easy to handle.

It has been ergonomically designed. This is together with a backlit LCD display and an easy to use knob to select different measurement indicators.

What I really like about this multimeter is that it also comes with a orange slip on as a rubber holster. This small additional casing protection makes the multimeter a lot more resistant to impact damages.

The support stand is also very sturdy and you can easily place the multimeter on a flat surface as you are performing work.

Safety should never be compromised and that is exactly the case with this multimeter. It is equipped with two fuses that provide for over current protection.

Furthermore it is versatile and includes a large a low battery indicator.

The one thing that is a negative about this multimeter is that the user manual is not very clear and the font is very small.

Also another annoying this is that it does not beep upon completion of a continuity test, which is a bit of an annoyance. You also cannot measure capacitance in microfarads, so make sure before you consider this multimeter you are fully aware of this.

With that being said, this multimeter is still one of the best inexpensive and budget multimeters that you will come across on the market without a doubt. It is cheap, low cost and very affordable for all the features that you will be getting.

I definitely recommend this multimeter as one of the best value for money budget multimeters around.

The 10 MOhm resistance measurement range is great making this multimeter versatile to use under different conditions.

What I must say that I really like about this multimeter, is that you can easily use it hands free. It comes together with a wrist strap, and an auto shut off feature.

One thing to think about if you decide to go for this budget multimeter option, is that the probe is a bit small and limited.

With that being said, the size of the multimeter overall is quite compact at 2 x 10 x 5 inches and 8 ounces.

When looking for one of the best budget multimeters, you will not go wrong with the Innova 3320 auto ranging multimeter.

My Overall #1 Pick: Astro AI Digital Multimeter

All the budget multimeters in this guide are really good.

However the best option for me, has got to be the Astro AI digital multimeter.

It is in my opinion one of the most complete budget multimeters on the market.

The thing that really separates it from the others, it has a functional temperature measurement over and above the typical measurements you would expect.

Final Thoughts On The Best Budget Multimeter

I hope that this guide has been helpful, as you can see choosing a budget multimeter is not that difficult.

I have compiled the best on the market and have made the process that much easier. When going for a measurement tool, always remember that inexpensive or cheap should never translate to lower quality. Especially in the case of a multimeter.
