Klein Tools NCVT-4IR Voltage Tester
The Klein Tools NCVT-4IR Voltage Tester, is an incredible tool non contact voltage tester and very versatile as well. It is compact including both NVCT and IR temperature measurements.
It has been thoroughly designed to work and operate in HVAC applications, allowing for a wide AC measurement range of between 12 V to 1000V.
What I really like about this tool, is that it has a number of really great ergonomic features. These include the laser pointer that helps target temperature measurements and pocket clips for easy carry.
The IR thermometer however is a bit of a conundrum for this specific voltage tester because although the datasheet mentions the wide range of measurements. From -22 to 482 degree Fahrenheit (-30 to 250 degree Celsius).
There are more than a number of accounts were buyers complain that the non contact voltage tester’s IR Thermometer is not very accurate at all, even having measurement inaccuracies when it comes to temperature in the range of 3 to 6 degrees.
This certainly something worth looking, if you intend on purchasing this specific non contact voltage tester.
However, with that being said, you can use this tool to determine the voltages in insulated cord and cables, circuit breakers and electronic components. With a backlit LCD able to provide a resolution of up to 0.1 degree.
It is also quite sturdily designed with an O shaped ring and screw mechanism for the battery caps that is design to prevent dust and water resistance.
If you are after one of the best non contact voltage tester, without a doubt you cannot go wrong with the Klein Tools NCVT-4IR Voltage Tester.

Why This Guide For The Best Non Contact Voltage Tester
The benefit of a non contact voltage tester often goes unappreciated. This pencil like tool is fantastic for performing diagnostics on live and null wiring. It is an incredible tool for any electricians or DIYer’s toolbox.
It is generally designed to be robust and safe to use, mitigating the need for any contact with large voltages.
However a quick google search on the world wide web and one will very quickly discover that there are more options that you can comprehend.
This will leave you scratching your head trying to figure out which product is the best and what features you should focus on when making a purchasing selection.

I know this frustration all to well, hence why I developed this guide to make your purchasing decision that much easier and more seamless. I have gone through many datasheets, product manuals and online reviews to bring you only the best.
This coupled with my engineering background I believe I am best placed to provide a thorough analysis on the various options, things to look out for and what to avoid.
I also keep this guide periodically updated.
What Are The Important Considerations For The Best Non Contact Voltage Tester
Dimensions and Weight
The overall dimensions and weight of the tester are very important, although all the best have a similar pencil shape and overall design. You should still be looking at having a tester that weighs around 1.5 to 3 ounces.
There are certain options that are heavier – however the 1.5 to 3 ounces is generally a sweet spot.
In terms of the dimensions – you want to have a tester that can fit easily between your fingers (almost like you are holding a pen or pencil). Bulky options are usually not very user friendly.
All the different options that I have recommended in this guide have been chosen specifically due to their great weight to product dimension ratio.
So you do not need to worry in this regard. However if you go and look to purchase the non contact voltage tester elsewhere – please do not forget to factor weight and dimensions into your purchasing decision.

Ergonomic Features
From what I have seen the competition is very tough for these kinds of testers, and the market has responded by adding nice and ergonomic features that really improve the overall usability of the tool.
These features include things like rubberized handles, LED lights for working in tight spaces and analog LCD displays that are designed for voltage sensitivities.
I will let you know without a doubt these features make a huge difference between an average tester and the best non contact voltage tester.
As you go through the multiple options be sure to investigate the ergonomic features that come with each tool. All of these were chosen with ergonomics in mind.

Battery Life
As with all battery powered applications, battery management is important. Typically you will find that all you need are AAA batteries and interchanging them is actually very simple.
I say this with tongue in cheek because you won’t believe how many reasonable non contact voltage testers I came across that did not at the very least have a simple way of interchanging the battery.
As you can imagine these did not make this list. All of the measurement tools in this guide are specifically chosen because they have an effective and useful battery life.
What To Avoid When Buying The Best Non Contact Voltage Tester
Bulky NCV head
When selecting this measurement tool be sure to check that the NCV head can at the very least enter through a wall socket. A bulky head is of no use, especially when performing certain diagnostic tests.
From my overall experience, I would state that at least 1 in 7 NCV tester had bulky test heads.
This also leads to something even more problematic, measurement certainty. The larger the head the more difficult it is to test the difference between wires that are very close to one another.
This problem is a common problem for NCV testers but it gets exasperated, when you have a larger than usually sensor point (i.e. the bulky head).

Lack of Safety Certifications
Almost all really decent NCV testers can detect voltages up to about 1000 Vac. This obviously requires a high level of safety as such voltages can be very harmful.
Typically really good testers are accredited by a combination of CE, CAT III or CAT IV.
These standards are generally enough to provide broad coverage from the stressed to be faced when performing measurements at such high voltages.
One of the criteria I took very seriously when preparing this guide was safety. For me when operating and working with measurement tools safety is number 1.
Further hint, you may also want to use workman gloves when operating the NCV tester, for that added layer of protection.
Either way always follow the manufacturers safety guidelines whenever you decide to operate any measurement tool.

Built using cheap plastics and materials
Check the material in which the NCV tester is constructed. Many manufacturers use cheap material as a way of cutting down on extra costs.
I generally also look for compliance with the 9.8ft/3m drop test. Also manufacturers that use high grade material will typically flaunt this when advertising their products.
So I look for reference in regard to lightweight, durable polycarbonate plastic resin or something similar as well when performing my due diligence.
Only the best non contact voltage tester has made the grade in this guide. I have taken into consideration all the things you must avoid when performing my search.
As stated above if you decide to purchase via other channels please check this over and over again.
